"Exhausts"

Published 03/07/2006

Exhausts
Exhausts are the ducts or pipes through which waste is emitted from an engine of a vehicle and are a part of its exhaust system that is a collection of many of these pipes. Sometimes they are also referred to as tailpipes. They are an essential part of the car since this is the apparatus for drawing out the noxious air or fumes. Usually found at the rear of the car this apparently simple object is a necessity for the proper running of a car. Automobile Exhausts usually include a muffler to reduce the engine noise and also recently a catalytic converter to reduce the emissions that contribute to air pollution. Usually the gases are very hot and the Exhausts have to be heat resistant and not pass through combustible material. They do for cars what chimneys do for stationary structures. In a two-stroke engine such as the ones used in dirt bikes there is a bulge in the pipe known as the expansion chamber which uses the pressure of the exhaust to create a pump that squeezes more air and fuel into the cylinder. This provides greater power and fuel efficiency. Exhausts have been constantly upgraded and remodeled over the years to improve their efficiency because of the recent increase in awareness of the pollution and environment problems all over the world. The end of the exhaust pipe where it vents to the open air, which is also the only visible part, often ends with a straight or angled cut, but occasionally may also include a fancy tip which may be chromed or of a larger pipe. This can be used to enhance and augment the appearance of the car and make it look more attractive. This may also help in producing a final reduction in pressure and may prevent or reduce the rusting of the tip.
